This week, I have been doing a lot of writing in
class and outside of class for my job. There have been so many events in need
of press releases at the nonprofit I work for, Serve Denton, so I have had much
opportunity to practice my professional writing. This class allows my mind to
rest more as I write and go with the flow.
I just finished the week 3 project assignment where I was able to delve
deeper into the different types of styles I could use for my final project.
Letting my mind brainstorm got me excited to start on the final project because
as I read through more stories from the Bible Women Unit of the UN-Textbook, I
got a better idea of how I could combine a few of the stories, whether that be
because of abstract reasons or because of direct similarities. For example, the
main theme that runs through the twenty stories in the unit is grace, which is
a wonderful and easy topic to write about. When you are passionate about a
subject, writing seems to just flow off the fingers, at least when you type.
Grace is something I deeply value. There are plenty of times I decide not to
grant it, or I deeply dislike the idea because I feel I have been wronged, but
by reading through so many stories that show the beauty of the act, I get a
constant reminder to grant grace even when I do not desire to.
I am taking a class called Languages Across Cultures, which has given me
a new perspective on different cultures. This seems to overlap with this class
because so many of the stories are deeply rooted in its country’s culture. For
example, many of the units we will read through, their origins come from Europe
or the Middle East.
Hi Brooke, I believe that you were in my comp 1 class freshman year?
ReplyDeleteSince you have to do writing for work, I bet that this class is a great relief to be able to write about more unprofessional things. I am about to start my week 3 project assignment, and am excited to find out more about the different styles that we can use for our final project. I noticed how much you value grace. I also agree that it is easy to write about things that we are passionate about. They really do just flow and the ideas come to mind immediately.
That's really cool that you work for a non-profit! I think working on the Bible Women would be a cool idea. That's what I read for the biblical section of our week 3 and I thought it was pretty interesting. I am in a women's gender study class so I felt like I needed to hear some stories about women in the bible since I knew very little. I have started to think what I need to do as well but not sure. But I might take bible women into consideration.
ReplyDeleteI love that you took what you have been learning at your job and incorporating in into school. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what knowledge is. I think brainstorming is such an important part of this class, and we all need to take more time to think about each assignment individually. I also think it's really cool that you talked about grace as a tangible thing.
ReplyDeleteI also was leaning towards writing about the Bible Women Unit but I ended up deciding on something else. I think that grace would be a great topic to write about. It is something that is so hard for people to do but it is such an amazing thing to be able to do. I know that I personally have a hard time doing it. I think it would make a really good storybook topic.
ReplyDeleteWhat all do you do for Serve Denton? I am a social work major so I love learning about nonprofits and service agencies. I had to write a lot this week too and feel that this class is a nice break from professional and/or research writing. '
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of writing about the common theme of grace in the biblical women's stories. I look forward to reading your storybook and seeing how you take that further. Have you thought about taking that theme and using it to write a how-to style storybook or a spiritual guidance sort of book? It could be really interesting. Either way, I bet your stories will be great reads!
Your Languages Across Cultures class sounds interesting. What sort of reading and assignments do you do in there? Are you taking it for your major or as an elective?
