Introduction: Shalom Friends

Shalom everyone! My name is Brooke Jeary, and I have greeted people with the word "Shalom" for quite some time now. The word means peace in the Hebrew language, which makes it a beautiful greeting in my opinion. I am a senior at the University of Oklahoma studying advertising and minoring in nonprofit organizational studies.

I have been dating my fiancé since my freshman year of college. He has four younger brothers who I went to high school with and the middle-aged one set us up on a blind date over Thanksgiving break. It worked out great, and we are getting married in June of this year! We did long distance the whole time we dated so I talked to my advisor about making my whole last semester of school online so I could move back home to Texas and live in the same state as him doing normal life instead of just seeing each other on the weekends. She arranged my schedule so I could accomplish my plan, and I am so excited to be back here for a few months doing life with him and living with my family again.

I will be working part-time at a local nonprofit called Serve Denton doing their social media marketing and design work while I finish up my degree. I worked for them as an intern last summer and when they offered me a part-time job, I immediately accepted.

I enjoy the outdoors, running, painting, kayaking, hiking, and talking to new people about deep topics. I am a Christian and I love my Jesus. His grace astounds me because of how undeserving I am of forgiveness from a perfect God. Fashion has always caught my interest. I can shop at thrift stores or Nordstrom and mix my outfits to make something I see as stylish. I use to have a Scottish terrier named Sofie, but she passed away a few years ago.  Thanks for reading my ramble and I hope you know more about me because of this blog post!

This is my fiancé Bret.

  1. Oh, what a sweet picture, Brooke! And I am so glad that the online course option is working so well for you. Wonderful! I actually am living in North Carolina for family reasons right now also (taking care of very elderly father-in-law)... as it happens, I have discovered that I like teaching online even better than in the classroom, so online suits me just fine in every way! I hope you will have a great time with the class, and it sounds like you will really enjoy the readings in the first weeks. Maybe you will want to do a Bible-based project for the class, or a project about the other great storytelling traditions of Christianity. You have literally thousands of years of stories to work with there, very beautiful stuff!

  2. Non-profit work is great. I just started working for one a couple of months ago and it has been different but very rewarding!

  4. Awe! That's adorable that you and your fiancé have known each other for so long. Glad you were able to get your schedule worked out to see him when you are available. I really dig that you are interested in non-profit organizations and want to persue into that. Also, you like to be active and in nature which is exactly what I like to do. Running an hiking are my favorite things. I wish there were mountainous areas around Norman.

  5. Oh, man! I applaud you for keeping up a long distance relationship over FOUR years - that's incredible! And the picture you have of the two of you is adorable. I hope you two are very happy together.
Also, I am all about popping tags at those thrift stores. It's really hard to shop retail when you know you can get so many good things for much cheaper.

  6. Brooke! Norman misses you! I hope to you are enjoying your time at home in Denton and are getting to spend lots of time with Bret! I loved reading your intro and learning how you and Bret met. I'm looking forward for when you are visiting Norman again and on behalf of my roomies and myself, we are patiently awaiting our invitation to the most trendy/hipster wedding of 2015!! :)

  7. Aw that is so great that you made your long distance relationship work over the past couple years! I bet it is so nice to be back with your family again! I don't know if I would be able to move away from my family even to go to college just one state away. But good for you!! I love that you're minoring in nonprofit organizational studies! I thought about doing that for a bit but I didn't think it was right for me. Your picture is so cute!!

  8. Hey Brooke! It's great that you were able to get your classes online and be able to move home for your last semester! My work keeps me from going home and I usually end up staying here for a semester at a time so I think it's great that you get to be with your family and your fiance after having a long distance relationship. I think your work with the non profit sounds great! I'm sure it is something you will love! Hope you have a great semester!

  9. Hey, Brooke! Congratulations on being so close to graduating! Between graduating, being engaged, getting married, and accepting a new job, there’s so much to look forward to! I think it’s really cool you and your fiancé were set up on a blind date and it worked out so well. I met my fiancé my freshman year as well but no blind date – it was a normal date.

  10. Hey Brooke! It is nice to meet you. Congratulations on your wedding. It is soooo close. I am really glad you got it worked out so you could be closer to the people you love for you last semester. I think it is really awesome that you have an eye for fashion, and for a good bargain. Also, way to be bold in your faith! Thanks for sharing.

  12. Brooke- I am taking Intro to Non Profit Studies right now and greatly enjoying it. The picture of you and your fiancé is very nice. Did you take it at the Greenhouse in Norman? I too am engaged and my fiancé has lived seven hours away from since last August (he graduated before me). It can be really hard but I am glad you were able to move closer. Good luck!

  13. Hey Brooke! My girlfriend is actually also majoring in advertising and minoring in nonprofit organizational studies! She enjoys it quite a bit. That's really cool that you're so interested in nonprofits. I spent two semesters working with an organization on campus called The Oklahoma Group where I got to do consulting for two nonprofits and really enjoyed it!

  14. Congrats on your engagement, Brooke! It's always nice to see people finding the right person for them, even if you don't know the people that got together. So that's awesome for you! That's cool you're in advertising, I have so much respect for ad majors because it can be quite difficult to consistently come up with creative ways to promote a product!

  15. Nice to meet you Brooke. Shalom to you as well. It is good to see that you and your fiance are so happy. Who would have thought that a blind date would have turned into a marriage? It was great to get to know you, and I look forward to reading more of your blog in the future.

  16. Nice to meet you Brooke! Congratulations on getting married! Most of my friends from high school either are or are getting married soon. It's an exciting time for sure. I have no idea how you have kept up the long-distance relationship. I will be moving to Cleveland this summer, so my boyfriend and I are going to separate. It's such a weird feeling to have an expiration date with your best friend. Your job sounds great! The best opportunities can come from internships. Good luck with your graduation and wedding!
